I was first introduced to DE through Jasmine from Like A Mustard Seed and her post Why I Really Like Diatomaceous Earth. I had seen the word floating around Facebook, but hadn't REALLY paid it any attention. It wasn't long before I saw Jasmine's post and after reading it was intrigued! I immediately went to one of my favorite stores, Bulk Herb Store, and looked it up.
"Diatomaceaous Earth is used as an insecticide, due to its physico-sorptive properties. The fine powder absorbs lipids from the waxy outer layer of insects' exoskeletons, causing them to dehydrate. Arthropods die as a result of the water pressure deficiency, based on Fick's law of diffusion. This also works against gastropods and is commonly employed in gardening to defeat slugs. It can also be used to help control and eventually eliminate cockroach and flea infestations and has wide application for insect control in grain storage. It has also been used to control bedbug infestations, but this method may take weeks to work" - Bulk Herb StoreSounds GREAT, right? Um... no! Where's the part about HUMAN consumption?
Also called Fossil Shell Flour, has many health benefits. Diatomaceous earth consists of diatoms, a type hard-shelled algae which is a fossilized deposit of microscopic shells created by one celled plants called Diatoms. These plants inhabit all the waters of the earth, and serve as the basic food for aquatic life, just as grass is the basic food for land animals. Some of these deposits, shifted to dry land, are extremely important to humans. - Bulk Herb Store
Diatomaceous Earth attracts much junk that's in our system- metals, E. coli, pesticides, drug residue, etc... (<--- Tweet This!)
Helps clean up the walls of our intestines, allowing for regular bowel movements and gives you a healthier colon.
Part of DE gets absorbed as silica and silica has many wonderful benefits which include helping to lower cholesterol and blood pressure! Other benefits could be stronger hair and nails, healthier urinary tract, and sore joints feeling better!
How to use: Humans 1 heaping teaspoon stirred in cup of water, mixed in food or in anything you like. You can also brush your teeth with it once or twice a week to aide in teeth whitening. Simply add a little bit of the powder on top of your toothpaste OR to a wet toothbrush. Gently scrub teeth, spit, and rinse!
Children 1/2 to 1 level teaspoon per day. -Bulk Herb Store
It is safe to give to everyone. My children take 1/4-1/2 teaspoon daily and I take about 1 teaspoon daily. My husband has not been converted yet. It's simple. I mix it in with a little bit of juice and every drinks it happily. You may find the need for more fiber, although we have not experienced that need yet. It's also important that you drink a lot of water.
Do you take Diatomaceous Earth?

I was wondering if you know how long it can be stored before use. Thanks!
As long as it is kept dry, it has an unlimited shelf life!
Thanks for doing the research on this! Have you found it helps with internal parasites?
Natalia, Based upon EVERYTHING I've ever seen it does! I do not, however, have personal experience.
Really interesting article!
I have been using diatomaceous earth to kill buggies in my garden but never have taken it internally. I am worried about its effect on leaky gut. Have you read anything about that?
Thanks for sharing on Natural Living Monday! I am excited to see what you have to share this week :) http://wp.me/p2pBvv-F8
Amanda- I have heard people concern over it causing a leaky gut, but I can assure you that food grade DE is quite safe and it DOES help!
