Homemade Bubble Bath Recipe (Children's Health, Day 5)

Have you read the ingredients in your kids bubble bath lately? You might be surprised that some of the things in it are not quite a gentle as you would expect. The fragrances that are used are often very rough on young skin and the chemicals that are added are far from always being healthy or natural. You can buy products you trust from natural brands but they often come with a higher price tag. The solution for us is to make it ourselves.

Why should I be worried about the ingredients?

Good question. I looked into two popular bubble baths. Both had over 20 ingredients! That is a lot to be putting on your kids skin at once - and often daily. A few of these included:
  • Phenoxyethanol - Suspected of causing developmental and reproductive toxicity.
  • Methyl paraben - Recent concerns have risen over possible cause of breast cancer.
  • Methylchloroisothiazolinone - Commonly a skin and membrane irritant that in high concentrations causes chemical burns. It has been outlawed for use in Canada and Japan.
Those are just three ingredients out of the 20+ listed and it would only take one of those to make me not want to bathe my child in it.

You will need:

1 bar castile soap or 1 cup liquid castile soap
1 quart distilled water
3 oz organic glycerin
5 drops lavender essential oil (or another oil of choice that is safe of children)
2 tablespoons vitamin E oil

Directions

If you have a bar of soap you will need to grate it and then melt in down in a pot with your water. Then you will add the rest of your ingredients.
If you have the liquid soap you can just add everything together in a glass jar and shake to blend. I usually make sure to shake before use just to make sure everything is blended well.

Be aware

Some parents might not be able to make their own bubble bath - and that's OK. However, I encourage all parents to read the labels on the products they intend to use on their children. If there are a bunch of ingredients you can't pronounce you probably don't want to use it. There are many natural alternatives out there that you can buy or make yourself that will insure the safety of your child.

What an awesome idea. I have grandchildren with skin issues and always wished for bubbles to put in their water. I had no idea what was in bubble bath though. Thank you for educating me.

I haven't given my daughter a Bible bath in years because of the chemicals in the soap. I've simple washed her with castile but I'm excited to make this today and give it a try. I make all the other soaps in our home so I'm familiar with the process. I just didn't have a recipe that didn't use shampoo. So, thank you so much for this and for all you do!
